Description

Vicky, singer from Gambia (near Senegal), was like the musical queen of West Africa. She even sang for all the presidents and kings in the area… She is here accompanied by “funky makossa man” Manu Dibango and Jean-Pierre Sabar (the man who gave us “Vai vai” and played organ for Gainsbourg in the 60’s), and they both sign the arrangements. This LP features several traditional afro songs (sung in wolof), two ballads in english “Black As Night” and “Lovely Melody”, and a drumbreak on “Ndarkander” intro. My favourites here are the two afro jazzy tracks “Bissimilaye” with good drumbeat, vibra, strings and female chorus, and “Mandali Senegal” with organ and piano. Really nice.
